The Japanese have two words for "that."
"Sore," when the item is far away, but is closer to the person spoken to and "are" when it is far away from both the speaker and the person spoken to.
Adjectives
To put an adjective into the past, one way is to knock the "i" off the end of the adjective and add ...katta.
For example: hayai, becomes haya, becomes hayakatta.
Say kanashikatta, which means "sad," as though the syllables were separate words: ka-na-shee-kat-ta and its opposite, genki: gen-kee.
Say muzukashikatta, which means "difficult:" moo-zuu-ka-shee-kat-ta.
Say kantan, which means "simple:" kan-tan.
Say terebi, which means "TV:" teh-reh-bee.
Say kanai, which means "my wife:" ka-na-ee.
Say boushi, which means "hat:" boh-oo-shee.
