               ga          gi           gu        ge         go

Second Set

  1. Repeat First Step, from the previous page, on this second set of hiragana symbols. Notice that the second one is a "jee" sound and not a "zee" sound.

  3. As you can see there is an extra ji and an extra zu, but the above you will rarely come across and it won't become important until you are well into your study of Kanji.

Practice Step

  1. Without looking, try writing the hiragana symbol for as many of the five sets that you can.
  2. Check the above to see how you did.
  3. Keep trying until you get them all correct.

         ga          gi           gu        ge         go

         za          ji            zu        ze         zo

         ba          bi           bu        be         bo

         pa          pi           pu        pe         po

         da          ji             zu        de         do

There are also hiragana that are combined.

This is done by adding a small "ya, yu or yo" to letters.

For example: ki + ya = kya, chi + yu = chuu.

きゃ きゅ きょ                  しゃ しゅ しょ

ちゃ ちゅ ちょ                 りゃ りゅ りょ

         にゃ にゅ にょ

Finally, there's the double consonant, as in datta: った.

Do you notice the small っ ?

The above also applies when you are using katakana.
